THE BEATLES IN CLASSICS/ THE 12 CELLISTS OF THE BERLIN PHILHARMONIC/
TELDEC-WARNER MUSIC KOREA, 1995
For the twelve cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic, Easter Monday 1974 is a permanently engraved on
thei memories. It was on this day that they gave their first concert within the framework ok a large int-
national music festival, in the Mozarteum in Salzberg. As Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt subsequently
wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "The sound of this choir of strings hung suspended like
a bell over the astounded audience, which included Herbert von Karajan. The virtuoso playing by the
twelve Philharmonic cellists drew rapturous applausefrom all those listening. It was a firework display
of rare sounds and tonal combination never previously heard: bowing and plucking, col legno and
flageolet notes, delicate drumming, and countless subtle nuances ranging from sonorous bass to the
high octaves of the coloratura sopranos, surpassing all conventional notions of cello playing."
